We had an awesome time at Heller Nature Center. We were so lucky that we were able to reschedule after the cancellation last week. (But that was also a good "life lesson". The children learned that things don't always happen as planned.) We began our visit with the "Earth Magic" guided field trip. The children used their senses of sight, hearing, smell, and touch to explore nature. First the children were given rings of color chips. They had to try to find all of their colors as we walked along the path. Slide Show: We learned that animals have bigger ears than ours to help them hear. The children got to try some bigger listening ears. Slide show: The children picked small parts of plants, smashed them, put them into a cup and used their sense of smell. Then they shared their "scents" with a friend. Slide Show: Last, the children used their sense of touch to find things that were "soft", "bumpy", "squishy", "hard", and "wet". Slide Show: Then we went the the "Wander Woods" play area. This was their favorite part. They got very messy playing in the water and mud. They also found lots of worms, some blue spotted salamanders, and a toad. Slide Show: |
