Today was Mardi Gras in our classroom. We read a book about Mardi Gras and listened to some New Orleans Jazz. During small group rotations we did some Mardi Gras based math centers. In one center the children received some green, gold and purple Mardi Gras coins. They sorted and counted the coins. Then they graphed the amount of each color coin. At the second center each child had a tray with different length strands of beads ranging from 2 beads to 16 beads. Their challenge was to put the strands of beads in order from the shortest to the longest. In the third center the children worked on fine motor skills, counting and numeral recognition. The children used tweezers to grab a stand of beads. Then they counted the beads on the stand and put in into the bowl with the corresponding numeral. During center time the children were able to use feathers, sequins, tissue paper and more to decorate Mardi Gras masks. The favorite item for decorating was the glitter glue. Everyone got to wear a Mardi Gras necklace home at the end of the day.
